Did you grow up thinking that a person’s IQ determined how far they got in life? I sure did. I thought that those that were successful had genetic gifts and were born with higher IQs and there was really nothing more that could be done other than to accept your lot in life. Nothing could be further from the truth. The real key to success is your attitude. Get your attitude right and your success is inevitable. Let’s take at the 4 reasons why.
“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” – Zig Ziglar
In her bestselling book, Mindset, Carol Dweck discusses the growth mindset. She maintains that individuals can improve if they put enough effort into what they do. Dweck states, “Failure is information—we label it failure, but it’s more like, ‘This didn’t work, and I’m a problem solver, so I’ll try something else.” This type of attitude can be seen in many of the greatest sports heroes in history. It is well known that basketball legend Michael Jordan practiced as hard he played and had many failures along the way. He didn’t have the same gifts other players had, but his attitude and work ethic propelled him to tirelessly work at his craft and through failures. We all know the results he achieved. Successful people have a growth mindset.
Another factor successful people have in common is that they are obsessed. If you study anyone with a high degree of success you will learn that what they achieved they were obsessed with – the Wright Brothers with flight, Henry Ford with the automobile, and Walt Disney with a better tomorrow. Are you obsessed? Successful people are.
3. Never Give Up
This is one that took me a long time to learn. I used to give up all the time. When things got a little difficult or uncomfortable, I’d simply walk away. I didn’t want to work through the trials and discomfort to get to the next level. However, when I decided to not give up my life started to change. I started seeing more successes and more satisfaction from my life. Successful people never give up.
4. Take Action
You can have the right attitude in place, however, if you stay inside your head nothing will ever happen. You must develop the attitude and habit of taking action. This is where the cycle of success starts to take shape. Take your idea and act on. Yes, you may fail but don’t let that stop you. Learn from it, readjust, then start again. You must take action if you are going to achieve greatness. Successful people take action
In the end, it doesn’t matter how high your IQ is. I would put someone that has a growth mindset, is obsessed with what they are after, will never give up, and continually take the necessary action against those with the highest IQs. From what I’ve seen, that person will come out ahead the majority of the time. As a matter of fact, and Dweck speaks to this in her book, you can have a higher IQ if you have a growth mindset. So, you can have the best of both worlds – superior attitude and IQ. However, as Zig Ziglar states, ‘your attitude will determine your altitude.”
