Steps to Get Promoted

So you want to get promoted?

I interview and meet a lot of people whose sole focus is to get promoted. Unfortunately, this short sided thinking is the very thing that keeps them from getting ahead. If you want to get promoted and create opportunities beyond your dreams, below are 3  steps you will need to take.

Provide More Value

Providing value is not just doing what is expected and making yourself look good in the eyes of your client and bosses. Adding value has everything to do with the other person and their wants, needs, and desires. This goes for those who are your client, who you work for, or someone that reports to you. Yes leaders, you must be providing value to your teams in order to help them grow and excel.

How do you know what is of value to them? Ask them. Get to know the wants and needs of those you are serving and not only give that to them, but give them more than what they expect with no expectation of return. To learn more on this read the article by Bob Burg here. Not only will those you serve benefit, but you will gain enormous value in your own life and career.

Model The Best

Finding someone who is where you want to be or doing the things you want to do will save you hours, if not years in your personal growth. The concept is simple, however, in order to find someone to model you first need to get very clear on your goals and objectives (for steps on goal setting read this article on Goal Achievement). Once you have that understanding, you can then find the person in your sphere of influence or a well-known coach to model. The trick here is to learn everything you can about how they do what they do but not be a complete copy cat. This may mean you take the best of several individuals and apply it to your situation. This will take some up front effort and patience, however, the future benefits will far outweigh your initial work required.

Take Massive Action

Tony Robbins says, “The path to success is to take massive, determined action”.  Why ‘massive’ action? The reason lies in the fact that not all your efforts will bear fruit. The key here is you don’t know which efforts will yield a positive outcome. Some efforts will show immediate results, some may take years, and some will produce nothing. You need to put in the action, have the perseverance, and be patient. Along the way, measure what is working and adjust; so you are doing more of the efforts that are yielding results while modifying or stopping what is not working.

While promotion is never guaranteed, the person you will become along this journey will provide opportunities far beyond what a single event, such as a promotion, can provide. So, contribute the most value you can, find those are doing it best, and take massive action to get it done. Most of all, enjoy the journey – you’ll be glad you did.

A very good point is made. One must exceed expectations and provide value in the eyes of the customer. Great practice to use at work.
