Have you ever wondered what makes people successful? Is there a formula or one thing that makes successful people different from anybody else? I’ve been on the same quest and finally figured out the secret. Are you ready for it?
Before I reveal the secret, think about your successes in life. What is one thing you’ve done time and again on your journey to success? Some will say Goal Setting, Discipline, and on and on. These things, along with a host of other success related words are definitely important. However, none has probably taught you more, changed you more, and affected you more than one of the scariest words on the planet and that is FAILURE. The irony is that if you want to succeed, you will need to fail.
If you search throughout history and study the most successful people you will find, before they succeeded, they failed – A LOT. Let’s take a look at a few of them.
Oprah Winfrey – fired from her first job as an anchor
“Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.”
Thomas Edison – failed thousands of times trying to invent the light bulb
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Walt Disney – was told by a former newspaper editor that he lacked imagination and had no good ideas
“Everyone falls down. Getting up is how you learn to walk.”
Michael Jordan – cut from his high school basketball team
“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
What Lessons Can You Learn From Failure?
Failure can occur when you are not paying attention. When something doesn’t go right, you can take the opportunity to quit or you can start over with an increased focus. Since you now know what didn’t work, you can narrow your focus to find what does work.
Failure will test you. How you choose to react will make all the difference in the world. Choose to quit and you’ll never discover your true potential. Choose to be persistent and never give up and you will achieve your goal.
By now I’m sure you’ll agree that failure is a natural part of success. Many see failure as something negative and to be avoided at all costs. What if you saw failure as a natural to progression to success and that faster you reached failure, the faster you’d succeed. What would you do? Fail Fast, of course. It’s all in your attitude and how you look at the world.
I don’t know anyone who enjoys failing. It’s not fun, can be extremely frustrated, and sometimes it can be devastating. However, if you understand the power of failure and how it translates to success, you can go take some risks and know that if you fail you are one step closer to success.
